Heinz pulls gay-kiss ad from UK airwaves

A Heinz TV advertisement has been pulled from the air in the United Kingdom after complaints from approximately 200 viewers, the Times of London reported.

The viewers reported the mayonnaise ad to the Advertising Standards Authority, complaining that it was both inappropriate and unsuitable for children because of a scene in which two men kiss, the Times said.

Nigel Dickie, director of corporate affairs for Heinz UK, told the Times, “It is our policy to listen to consumers. We recognize that some consumers raised concerns over the content of the ad and this prompted our decision to withdraw it.”

Emirates sheik tried in assault on man in bar
A Rochester, N.Y., man could get $960,000 if a Swiss court agrees that the sheik made unwanted advances, then whipped him with a belt in rage.
Geneva’s chief prosecutor argued Thursday that a brother of the United Arab Emirates’ ruler should receive the maximum penalty on a charge of assaulting an American man with his belt in a luxury hotel bar.
Silvano Orsi, a resident of Rochester, N.Y., says Sheik Falah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan hit him repeatedly with a belt with a steel buckle after Orsi declined a bottle of champagne from the sheik.
The sheik and his lawyer deny the charges. Defense lawyer Marco Crisante told the court that Orsi’s legal complaint was full of lies meant to pressure the sheik for money.
Geneva’s chief prosecutor, Daniel Zappelli, said that the defendant should be given the maximum penalty of more than $960,000 for the incident in the bar of Geneva’s La Reserve Hotel.

George Michael sounds off on gay marriage in US, says it’s ‘way overdue’

George Michael is a most happy fellow these days: He’s kicking off his first North American tour in 17 years and same-sex marriage has just been legalized in California.
“It’s way overdue,” the 44-year-old English pop star told The Associated Press. “It’s something that happened … almost without a whisper in England, but it was basically because we weren’t that concerned about the word ‘marriage.”’
Michael, who is openly gay, said, “because this is a much more religious society, there are a huge number of people who want (their) unions to be part of something that they can place in their religion, so (marriage is) much more important here. I think that’s why it’s so long in arriving here, but I think it’s fantastic, obviously.”
Hundreds of gay and lesbian couples rushed to county clerks’ offices throughout California this week to obtain marriage licenses and exchange vows as same-sex marriage became legal Monday afternoon.
The next day, Michael kicked off the multi-city “25 Live” tour at the San Diego Sports Arena.
Why so long between concerts here?
“The ’90s were a bit of a disaster for me in so many ways. On a personal level, I don’t think I could have toured. Also, I had some physical problems with my back that are now sorted and I just wasn’t in the right state of mind,” he told the AP.
Michael, who recently released his greatest-hits album, “Twenty Five,” in the United States, has said this will be his last arena tour because he wants to lead a quieter life.

Little Britain star’s gay divorce
LITTLE Britain star Matt Lucas has split from his long-term partner in the first celebrity gay divorce.
The couple’s pantomime-themed civil partnership ceremony 18 months ago means TV producer Kevin McGee, 31, can now expect a big chunk of the comedian’s $31 million fortune.
Lucas has already employed Heather Mills’s divorce lawyer Mishcon de Reya.
A legal source said McGee can expect a house, financial maintenance and a substantial sum of cash, having lived with Lucas for four years before they wed and supported Lucas before his career took off.
A friend of Lucas said: “Matt is really concerned it does not do much for the image of gay civil partnerships.
“But he thinks you can’t live in a loveless marriage and if it’s over, then it’s over.”
Same-sex civil ceremonies have been legal in the UK since December 2005.

Switching channels as the world gets married
A censorship manager with Singapore’s largest free-to-air channel warns that “(e)ven a cooking show can be dangerous” as just one remark can “normalise (the) gay lifestyle.” Meanwhile, Singapore’s newly appointed Attorney-General warns of human rights “fanatics.”
Every now and then, there’s a story in Fridae about this and that being censored in Singapore, particularly on television. Similar grouses are increasingly being carried on many other blogs and forums, and as digital speech assumes a greater part of information intake for the average guy, these complaints are now harder for media companies to ignore.
